Discovery Night at the Museum

There is something special happening AFTER HOURS at the Coastal Discovery Museum. Don’t miss out on the opportunity to participate in unique experiences on Thursday evenings. Topics, activities, times, and fees vary…so keep checking the calendar to see what’s next.

Only registered paid participants will be admitted into programs.

Most Discovery Night programs are designed for ages 13 and older.

9/14/2023 Wildlife Photography Class 4:30PM-6:30PM

Learn creative techniques that will enhance your wildlife photography skills as well as improve your knowledge of wildlife subjects in their environments. Experienced wildlife photographer, Mary Alice Tartler, will guide you through understanding your camera, necessary camera equipment, the importance of composition, animal behaviors and environments, and finding wildlife in the Lowcountry. No matter what level of expertise you possess, this class will be better prepared to take your photography to the next level. All nature and wildlife enthusiasts and all levels of photography expertise are welcome to attend. Please bring your camera!

9/21/2023 Sea Turtle Paint Party 5PM – 7PM

Relax and let your creative juices flow during this fun and informal Sea Turtle Starry Night Painting Party! Explore the joys of color blending, working with shapes and brush strokes, and expressing yourself in an inspirational atmosphere. Aided by Camilla Pagliaroli, local artist and owner of Create with Camilla, you will paint on an 11×14 canvas using acrylics. This event is open to artists of all levels, styles, and interests; some will lean more towards the realistic and others more abstract, and that is the fun of painting together! At the end of the evening, you will go home with your own original work of art. All supplies included. Adults are welcome to bring wine to enjoy while painting.

9/28/2023 Indigo Exploration

Journey to the past and “meet” Eliza Lucas Pinckney. In 1739, when Eliza was just 17 years old, her experiments with indigo resulted in a very profitable industry for the colony of South Carolina. Hear her unique story, learn how indigo dye was made, and make your own indigo tie-dye t-shirt to take home. The Museum will provide you with one t-shirt (size Child M – Adult XL) to tie dye with indigo dye made from what was once our area’s well-known “cash crop.” You are welcome to bring an additional cotton item to dye.

Do you ever need a last-minute hostess or get-well gift but don’t have time to run to the store? Do you like flower arranging but don’t think you have the talent? If you answered yes to either of these questions, this program is for you. Learn how to use what grows in your back yard to make beautiful arrangements. Nature is beauty itself! Join us and see how easy it is to arrange materials found in your back yard landscape into something beautiful.

10/12/2023 Terrarium Workshop

Did you know that terrariums changed the world and were one of the most important inventions/discoveries of the 1800? Learn the fascinating history of terrariums, and then create your own to take home! Master Gardener Marcia Lentz will guide participants through the process of making and caring for your glass terrarium. No prior experience needed. All supplies provided.

10/26/2023 Art-full Seeding 5PM- 7:30PM

Turn seed saving, sharing, and gifting into a fun and creative art project, or even a new hobby. During this workshop, artist Lisa D. Watson will guide you through the process of seeding, packaging, designing, and producing your own unique and artistic seed packets to take home. No prior experience needed. All supplies are provided (including seeds).

11/2/2023 Pumpkins, Posies & Prosecco! 5PM- 6PM

Create a fun and unique fall floral decoration. Design, cut, and craft flowers, greenery, and a pumpkin into an amazing autumn arrangement as you enjoy a glass (or two) of prosecco. Jill Moore, owner of Moore to Life and a Master Naturalist, will share fun facts about fall flowers, greenery, pumpkins, and the use of essential oils as she guides you through creating your own arrangement. All supplies provided.

11/16/2023 Jellyfish Lantern Workshop 5PM – 8PM

Make your own Jellyfish Lantern for this year’s Hilton Head Lantern Parade! Artist Chantelle Rytter has created kits especially for this workshop at the Coastal Discovery Museum. Chantelle will guide you through the process of creating your own Jellyfish Lantern and provide all the supplies needed…including the lights.
